Book Review – ‘Annabelle’ and ‘Traveling Left of Center’

Nancy Christie

We all have our fantasies—our hopes and dreams of what we want our future to be. But what happens when our fantasies are based on an erroneous interpretation of past events, when our hopes and dreams are so far from reality that they prevent us from having any kind of a normal life?

A lonely young woman, all Annabelle wants is to love and be loved. But the twin emotions of fear and guilt, from a passion born on a summer day so many years ago, hold her fast.

ANNABELLE is about love, longing and loss – and the price each character pays for passion.   From Nancy Christie

‘Annabelle’ Review:

Annabelle, the daughter of an artist and his muse, wants nothing more than to have her father notice her. The day finally comes when he sees the beautiful young woman she is, but instead of happily-ever-after, her world takes a hard left turn.
The emotion in the story is so real I had to ask Ms. Christie if the story was from personal experience. It turns out it’s her amazing imagination. A fantastic read that keeps you guessing!

Nancy asked me to read and review ‘Annabelle’ quite a while ago.  I didn’t know it at the time but ‘Annabelle’ is one of a number of short stories in Nancy’s new anthology, ‘Traveling Left of Center’.  By that time, the book was close to publication, so she sent it to me to read and ‘offer some opinions’ (cleverly not asking for a ‘review,’ just an opinion).  I read the book and ‘offered my opinions,’ per her request.

Traveling Left of Center
and Other Stories

Nancy Christie

There are some people who, whether by accident or design, find themselves traveling left of center. Unable or unwilling to seize control over their lives, they allow fate to dictate the path they take—often with disastrous results.

Traveling Left of Center and Other Stories  details characters in life situations for which they are emotionally or mentally unprepared. Their methods of coping range from the passive (“The Healer”) and the aggressive (“The Clock”) to the humorous (“Traveling Left of Center”) and hopeful (“Skating on Thin Ice”).

In each of these eighteen stories, the characters’ choices—or non-choices—are their own. But the outcomes may not be what they anticipated or desired. Will they have time to correct their course or will they crash?  From Nancy Christie

‘Traveling Left of Center’ Review

Having read Annabelle previously, my mistaken assumption was the stories between the covers would be similar. They’re not. Each of the eighteen stories is stand-alone, with its own set of circumstances, its own scenario, and its own cast of characters. Each one deals with whatever life dealt him/her in the only way they can, often with far less than satisfactory results.

Prepare for blurred lines between reality and the meaninglessness. Prepare to gasp in surprise. Prepare for raw emotion. Prepare for bursts of sympathy … or maybe even empathy … for the characters. And, maybe even prepare to cry.

Ms. Christie is a master storyteller.

Nancy Christie review pageNancy Christie Bio

My love affair with writing started in my childhood. Books carried me into worlds I never knew existed, and, once I learned how to write, my imagination kept me there. With paper and pen, I could bring people to life who never before existed. With 26 letters, I could create a universe of my own.

As an adult, writing is my way of making a connection with the rest of the world. Fiction, non-fiction, essays and books—they are all the tools with which I shape the land and make my home.
